Helping Families Thrive
One Meal At a Time
With the help of our dedicated volunteers and your generous donations, we help feed community members living with food insecurity from our location in Mount Jackson, Virginia.
Who We Are
We are a non-profit organization that operates a food pantry in Mount Jackson, Virginia where needy families can receive food. We are affiliated with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, a partner food bank of Feeding America and the largest hunger relief organization in central and western Virginia. Food banks like the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank purchase or receive donated products from the food industry and distributes it to food pantries like us that provide nutritious food directly to individuals in need.
We are open every third Thursday of the month from 12 pm until 6 pm.

How Do We Get Food for the Pantry?
We obtain food from several different sources

USDA
Through our partnership with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, we obtain food under the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). TEFAP is a Federal program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that helps supplement the diets of people with low income by providing them with food assistance at no cost. Through food banks and partner food pantries, federally supplied foods are distributed to eligible households. Eligibility is based on recipient income, and distribution is limited to one time per month, per family.

Donations
Food banks and food pantries were created in part to reclaim food that would otherwise go to waste and redistribute that food to people in need. That ideal is still at the heart of a significant percentage of the food we obtain and distribute. We obtain regular daily donations of food from Food Lion in Mount Jackson, Virginia. We also receive donations from local wholesale food businesses, and from food drives organized by local churches and schools and other community focused organizations.

Purchased Food
Donations of certain foods necessary to provide a well-balanced nutritional menu to our clients are hard to come by these days. As a result, we must purchase products each month to compensate. We buy food made available to us by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, such as canned foods, dry goods and produce. We also buy foods such as eggs, butter and meats from local retailers and wholesalers to round out a healthy menu. Financial support from donor contributions allows us to buy needed food that is not donated.
